Review of Trulicity efficacy results
Trulicity lowers fasting and postprandial glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes. The reduction in fasting and postprandial glucose is evident after a single dose.
Trulicity as Monotherapy:
In a 52 week study, 807 patients were randomized to receive Trulicity 0.75 mg once weekly, Trulicity 1.5 mg once weekly, or metformin 1500 to 2000 mg/day.
On average, patients were 56 years old and had type diabetes for 3 years. After 26 weeks of treatment, patients who received Trulicity 0.75 mg and 1.5 mg showed a reduction in HbA1c by 0.7% and 0.8%, respectively. Patients who received metformin had an HbA1c reduction of 0.6%. This study showed that Trulicity is as effective as metformin.
Trulicity combined with metformin:
Another study compared Trulicity as an add-on to metformin versus sitagliptin with metformin in 972 patients after 52 weeks of treatment. In patients who received Trulicity 0.75 mg with metformin, 49% achieved HbA1c less than 7% and the average weight loss was 2.7 kg. In patients who received Trulicity 1.5 mg with metformin, 59% achieved HbA1c less than 7% and average weight loss was 3.1 kg. In patients who took sitagliptin 100 mg with metformin, 33% achieved HbA1c less than 7% and average weight loss was 1.5 kg.
Interesting facts about Trulicity
Trulicity may lead to an average weight loss of 2 to 6 pounds. Clinical trials showed weight loss when Trulicity was added on to metformin and when added to insulin lispro with or without metformin. This effect is more pronounced with a weekly dose of 1.5 mg.
