There is no cure for the majority of neurological diseases such as cervical dystonia and upper and lower limb spasticity. Cervical dystonia causes involuntary contraction and abnormal movements of the neck muscles. Biologic medications such as Dysport are quickly becoming the preferred agents for cervical dystonia due to improvements in symptoms (posture, pain, and disability) in patients who have not benefited from oral medications.

Biologic Medications for Neurological Conditions:

  • abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport)
  • onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox)
  • incobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin)
  • anakinra (Kineret)
  • rimabotulinumtoxinB (Myobloc)
  • follitropin alpha (Gonal f)

Of all of the popular dermatological products on the market, there may be none more popular than onabotulinumtoxin A (Botox) which offers the cosmetic value of temporarily reducing facial wrinkles (for approximately three months).  The therapy is derived from botulinum toxins which when injected into muscle tissue prevent contractions and thereby reduces the appearance of wrinkles.  There is a risk of complication, however, which includes facial swelling which could last between 2 to 12 weeks, and the weakening of eyebrow and eyelid muscles.

Biologic Medications for Dermatology Conditions:

  • abobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport)
  • onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox)
  • collagenase (Santyl)
  • ecallantide (Kalbitor)
  • incobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin)
  • collagenase clostridium histolyticum (Xiaflex)

Eye Conditions

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of legal blindness or severe visual impairment in industrialized countries. In Wet type AMD, newly formed blood vessels formed behind the eye release fluids that can cause blurry vision and eventually blindness.  Biologics that target the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) can slow down, stop and sometimes even reverse the formation of these blood vessels and save vision.  The recommended treatment is intravitreal (eye injectable) biologics such as bevacizumab, ranibizumab or afilbercept alongside the supplementation of zinc and antioxidant vitamins.

Biologic Medications for Eye Disorders:

  • aflibercept (Eylea)
  • ranibizumab (Lucentis)
  • incobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin)
  • ocriplasmin (Jetrea),
  • bevacizumab (Avastin)
  • pegaptanib (Macugen)
