Whether it’s a short day trip or a weeklong journey, hiking a local trail or mountain can be a lot of fun and offer untold health benefits. Of course, hiking long stretches and for hours at a time can be physically taxing and even mentally demanding, but it's certainly a great way to exercise and enjoy all that nature has to offer. Depending on your plans, you may need special gear.

Planning on driving somewhere for an adventure hike? Make sure the vehicle you're driving is prepared for the journey by checking all fluid and oil levels. Additionally, check over your tires thoroughly to ensure they're properly inflated and that the tread isn't worn. If your tires are showing their age, it's best to replace them before heading out on your hiking adventure, as there's no need to risk a flat tire or lose control of your vehicle due to worn or defective tires.


If you're near or can easily get to a body of water, why not plan a day of fishing? Go in the morning before the heat of the day arrives and enjoy some time well-deserved bonding with your children or grandchildren. Indeed, there's nothing quite like learning how to fish and then throwing your line in the water to catch fish. The sun and fresh air, along with the wildlife around everywhere. Yeah, that’s what I'm talking about!



Every type of exercise has its selling points, but few are as enjoyable and easy on the body as swimming. Whether you take a dip in your backyard or community pool or decide to jump in a lake, swimming is ideal to lower blood pressure and decrease muscle stiffness, especially for people with osteoarthritis and for whom weight-bearing exercise can be excruciatingly painful.

Plus, enjoying the great outdoors while using the "buddy system" will keep you safe. Make a little competition out of it and see if your partner can keep up. If you decide to swim in the late evening, you can enjoy the sunset with your partner and top it off with some wine and sandwiches.

Safety First Always

Participating in outdoor activities comes with inherent risks for accidents. But because these incidents tend to be minor and typically don't cause great injury, many people don't give these risks due consideration. But before you head out, think of the risks of injury while partaking in any number of outdoor activities.

Additionally, be proactive in case of an emergency by bringing along a first-aid kit that's stocked with bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment, a splint, antiseptic wipes, flashlights, a compass and more. Of course, if you plan to be out of reach of emergency services, your first-aid kit should grow into an emergency medical kit.

Moreover, before heading out, make sure you alert family members and friends about your outdoor adventures and when you expect to return home. After all, you'll want know about your whereabouts in case you get lost or injured. Plus, if you don't return on schedule, authorities and rescuers can be alerted by family and friends to help find you. But make sure not to travel too far off course, as wandering in desolate locations can create even more havoc and will make it more difficult to be found.
